How to Store Gold Jewellery at Home

Gold is timeless, not because it never fades, but because it is cared for.
At Huguette, every piece is handcrafted in Cape Town with intention, individuality and meaning. And while gold is one of the most resilient precious metals, it still needs the right environment to stay as beautiful as the day it was made.

Whether your Huguette pieces are heirloom gifts, engagement promises, or deeply personal creations, here’s how to store them safely at home.

1. Store Gold Separately to Avoid Scratches

Gold is softer than many people realise, especially 18K and 22K pieces. When stored together, bangles, rings and chains can rub against each other and form micro-scratches.

Best practice:

Use individual pouches or cloth bags

Keep each piece in its own compartment in your jewellery box

Wrap delicate items in soft, lint-free cloth

This keeps your gold smooth, polished and flawless.

2. Keep Jewellery Away From Humidity and Direct Heat

Cape Town’s coastal air can accelerate damage if gold is left unprotected.
Moisture doesn’t tarnish pure gold, but it can affect alloys, clasps, and gemstones.

Avoid storing gold in:

Bathrooms

Near windows

Warm, damp cupboards

Ideal storage:
A dry, cool drawer or a jewellery box lined with felt or velvet.

3. Use Anti-Tarnish Strips or Silica Packs

Even though gold itself doesn’t tarnish, other metals mixed into the alloy (especially in white or rose gold) can react with air over time.

Placing a silica gel packet or anti-tarnish strip in your jewellery box helps regulate moisture and preserve the lustre of each piece.

These are inexpensive and extremely effective.

4. Keep Chains Clasped to Prevent Knots

Few things are as frustrating as a tangled gold chain, and pulling knots apart can cause stretching or breakage.

To store chains safely:

Always close the clasp before storing

Lay them flat in a long pouch

Or hang them individually on hooks inside a jewellery cabinet

This prevents knotting and unnecessary wear.

5. Clean Before You Store

Perfume, lotion, sunscreen and natural oils from the skin can cling to gold and form a dull film.

Before storing your jewellery for the day:

Wipe it with a soft microfibre cloth

Remove build-up gently

Avoid harsh chemicals and rough fabrics

A quick wipe keeps each piece shining longer.

6. Avoid Storing Gold Near Hard Gems

Diamonds, sapphires and other hard gemstones can scratch gold if kept too close.
Since Huguette pieces often mix metals and stones in custom designs, it’s important to store them carefully.

If you own multiple rings or pendants with gemstones:

Keep them separate

Use ring trays or soft dividers

Wrap gemstone pieces individually

7. For Long-Term Storage, Choose a Fabric-Lined Box

If you’re storing gold for months at a time, invest in a proper jewellery box with:

Soft lining

Dividers

A secure lid

Minimal exposure to air

This protects gold from dust, humidity and accidental knocks.

The Huguette Approach: Jewellery Made to Last Generations

Every Huguette piece is crafted with intention, designed not just to be worn, but to be cherished. Proper storage is a quiet act of care that preserves the story, sentiment and craftsmanship behind each custom-made creation.

Gold lasts.
But only when we look after what matters.
